Bad acne starts with the excessive production of oil in our skins’ glands.  Sebum is produced by sebaceous glands that lie just beneath the skin. Blackheads are follicles that are filled with sebum and dead skin cells that have undergone oxidation resulting in darker melanin. Whiteheads are for the most part the same, except that air cannot reach the follicle and cannot become oxidized leaving the area white. Papules happen when the pore wall breaks allowing white blood cells to enter and the pore becomes inflamed. Pustules, or Zits and Pimples, as they are commonly referred to, are the result of the white blood cells from papules making their way to the skin’s surface.  Bad acne is essentially a mass amount of clogged and/or inflamed pores.
